Learn Why The HSS Drilling Bit Is Tougher And More Resistant Than Common Drill Accessories

HSS Drill bits are not necessarily named for their quickness, although they do make a job faster. These drill bits got their name from the combined metals that are referred to as high-speed steel. HSS drill bits are made of those combined metals. Compared to other drill bits, high-speed drill bits are more resistant to extreme heat. Unlike ordinary drill bits that can only puncture wood, HSS drill bits can pierce both wood and metal. The capability of HSS drill bits to bore holes in both soft and hard surfaces make them the most widely used drill bits around.

Drill bits are tools composed of hard metal elements. The working area is a part of the cylinder that has sharp grooves for cutting. The upper part of the shaft is smooth and serves as a fixing area for the drill.

A drill bit made from high-carbon steel is not for drilling at extreme speed. This type of drill bit cannot endure high-speed drilling. This softening cause those to either dull by losing their hard edge of the flutes, or to snap short as that softness creates drag at the edges of the hole - be sure to see OSHA training courses for additional facts on this area. The metal elements that make up an HSS drill bit make it more durable than ordinary drill bits.

More carbon are added in HSS drill bits. Other metal elements such as vanadium, molybdenum, and tungsten are also added to make them much harder - be sure to see HSS drill bits to get additional facts associated with this subject area. Among the four types of standard HSS drill bits, an M7 HSS drill bit has the highest carbon, tungsten, molybdenum, and vanadium content. M7 HSS drill bits are widely used in airplane factories.

M2 HSS drill bits are highly preferred for their ability to stay hard enough to pierce metal even at extremely high temperature. Adding cobalt and more tungsten makes HSS drill bits remain hard and sharp even at extremely high temperature.

When your HSS drill bits become blunt after being used on some metals, you might be interested in cobalt drill bits. These drill bits are also made from high-speed steel, but it contains more cobalt than a regular HSS drill bit. They can drill through metals such as titanium and stainless steel.

If your project involves long drilling periods or needs regular drilling on metal and hardwood, a regular carbon drill bit won’t suffice. You need an HSS drill bit to successfully finish the project.
