Leading Reasons Why You Might Want A Pet Gate For Your Home
You return home, and your dog has wiped out your home. Slippers are torn, coaches torn open, the contents of the rubbish dispersed around the house...it's a huge mess. And there, coming to welcome you, is your loved dog. Sure, you might scold him, but that's not really going to help. The damage is done, and you know for certain that the next time you return home, a similar issue will occur.
There's one solution that can help : the dog gate. Dog gates are useful in keeping your over-destructive, hyper-active, separation anxiety ridden dog in one area of the house. This way, you can curb elimination and teach the dog the value of limits. Dog gates come in several designs these days, but the basic idea of most is easy - the gate is either pressure mounted or screwed into the wall. Some are extra wide, some are extra tall, and some open up when you release a latch so you can walk through while not having to train for Olympic hurdles.
There are even dog gates having a smaller door so your pussy-cat may go through, but your larger dog can't. Of course, the most secure gates in the world won't do you any good if your dog doesn't understand boundaries once the gates are down.
For some dogs, the difficulties might be separation uneasiness. For other dogs, it's discipline issues. For both issues, there are a few things you can do to help the difficulty before it gets out of hand. First, break a pattern while it's beginning. This suggests that if your dog gets riled up because you are leaving, don't leave in the same order. Don't make a giant fuss about leaving. It should all be uneventful and not in an order the dog can predict. Then leave the house silently. Breaking the pattern of leaving can help the dog to not get so worked up to start with.
If it's a behavior issue, and you know how your dog looks when he is going to get beyond control, break the behavior before it starts. If he is usually a harmful dog, tearing into your couch on a regular basis, stop the dog before he even starts to chew - when you see those first danger signs of the behaviour beginning. Does he start panting and getting excited? Is there another behaviour that triggers this one? Do you see him heading towards the couch?
Stop him before he even gets there, show him to a corner, have him sit down, and ensure he stays there until he relaxes down. A great way to ensure that your dog is nice and calm before you even leave the house is to take him on a walk - 30 minutes to an hour depending on the dog's energy level.
