Is there any need for us to trouble ourselves about the financial problems of our country, isn't the most distressing part over and done with now? There are probably more troubles facing the Canadian economy than we thought.
We have all learnt the Bank of Canada's views on this; that any problems are only short-term and then things will be getting better rapidly. The bank states that energy prices should start falling, or at least not rise any further. The current excuse for the depression, however, is assumed to have arisen from events in Japan. At first sight, this speculation might look correct, but if you start digging deeper, you realize that since our economy is represented mainly by consumers, we must look elsewhere. The misfortune in Japan will affect us, just as it affects the rest of the world, but it is definitely not the main reason. The majority of consumers are baffled by the consequences of gasoline prices and erratic job growth.
When looking at how much debt a person has, to put it in perspective you would look at incomings as well; in Canada this stands in the region of 1.5. Another thing in our favour is that the banking sectors are on a lot firmer ground, suggesting that if there was a bad situation with debt, then the banks would still stay strong. If it came, the effect of a fall in home prices caused by the recession would have considerably milder effects on banking sector profits than it had four years ago on the US one. This means that the Canadian economy seemingly wouldn’t need to carry the burden of bailouts that struck the US economy and US politics as well.
The one thing that has to be apparent to everyone is that the Canadian economy is closely linked to that of the US — notably in the field of bank stocks and BC real estate. Thus, it doesn’t matter how robust and stable the situation on the domestic market presently is; US problems have the potential to hit us hard. The contagion might hit from Europe, which is unfortunately having some serious problems concerning Portugal, Ireland, and Greece. Conditions have a way of escalating and drawing other countries in with tightening of credit which could affect the real estate market, shifts in the equity market and the fall of commodity prices; all with the chance of destroying Canada's economic potential.
