Public Speaking: Is There Anything You Would Rather Do Less?
I was taking a look at a catalog of phobias and some shocked me, and there was one thing that bowled me over. I almost couldn't believe it when I read it. It claimed that the majority of folks would rather die than talk in public. People with fears of public speaking would rather die than do it? I don't know about you but that's just extraordinary to me.
It is really an oxymoron because if you consider it for a second, we all literally talk in public every day. We all talk to little groups of folks we all know, like at a child's little league game or a cookout. Some more outward than others and some more refined but we will do it. I'm wondering if its all about being judged or if the individual had a hideous experience once before. Whatever the reason, it's wild that this is like the no 1 fear and folk would rather die.
I know someone that told to me that they had this problem. He is a coach and each year when he had to chat to the youngsters and their mom and pop at a annual banquet, almost everyone he already knew, he revealed he would just think about it and get scared. When it might be time to get up to the lectern he would sweat and feel feeble. And even though he thought that it was alright to do something within him held him back.
I can't conceive of this and maybe that is why it is so strange to me. I have just about always needed to answer a question in class, be in the college play, and even in the first grade and had no problem playing my music in front of folks. I actually like it and almost never feel scared. I do not comprehend why, just like folk who can't do it don't know why, I will and have no clue why.
Not long ago when my basketball coach buddy shared this with me I asked, did you ever do something about it? He said he went to conferences to be in a position to speak in public but he said that was like not knowing how to swim and being tossed in the lake off the back of the dock. They told you get up in front of people and talk, which was the problem in the 1st place. It really was a waste of time for him.
He also said to me he tried to remember back as far as he could to school, justbeing younger, all the parts of his past he could recall and he doesn't remember any experience when it may have begun. He was not the most social kid at college, so he is saying, but he wasn't shy and in the corner either. Just standard as he calls it. Seems bizarre to me but on the other hand lots of things appear strange to me.
Now that I know folks rather die than speak in public, well not all folks, but those with this fear, I wonder really why that is. Heck, we all talk to each other and wit's not like we are alone when we do. So what's the deal after we speak to folk and share what we are thinking? Now I'd really like to to know.
