Topological Degree Theory and Applications

Topological Degree Theory and Applications

$79.95

Since the 1960s, many researchers have extended topological degree theory to various non-compact type nonlinear mappings, and it has become a valuable tool in nonlinear analysis. Presenting a survey of advances made in generalizations of degree theory during the past decade, this book focuses on topological degree theory in normed spaces and its applications. The authors begin by introducing the Brouwer degree theory in Rn, then consider the Leray-Schauder degree for compact mappings in normed spaces. Next, they explore the degree theory for condensing mappings, including applications to ODEs in Banach spaces. This is followed by a study of degree theory for A-proper mappings and its applications to semilinear operator equations with Fredholm mappings and periodic boundary value problems. The focus then turns to construction of Mawhin’s coincidence degree for L-compact mappings, followed by a presentation of a degree theory for mappings of class (S+) and its perturbations with other monotone-type mappings. The final chapter studies the fixed point index theory in a cone of a Banach space and presents a notable new fixed point index for countably condensing maps. Examples and exercises complement each chapter. With its blend of old and new techniques, Topological Degree Theory and Applications forms an outstanding text for self-study or special topics courses and a valuable reference for anyone working in differential equations, analysis, or topology.

Adverbs of Degree in Dutch and Related Languages

Adverbs of Degree in Dutch and Related Languages

$158

Adverbs of degree form an intriguing part of the lexicon: numerous, multiform and everchanging. They also show a great variety in distribution. In this study, the characteristics of adverbs of degree are investigated from a semantic point of view. The main focus is on Dutch, but previous studies about English and German adverbs of degree are used to compare with and to build on. The book starts with an introduction on grading and gradability, and a classification of the adverbs according to the degree they express. Next, the different lexical sources from which the adverbs emerge and the process of grammaticalization are discussed. The main part of the book is devoted to semantic restrictions on the use of adverbs of degree, on the one hand restrictions concerning the modified elements, on the other hand those concerning the environment. Topics include absoluteness versus gradability, positive versus negative evaluation, the strengthening of negation, polarity sensitivity, the logical properties of the adverbs themselves, and restrictions to reduplication and stacking. Besides the main text, three case studies are presented in which the pecularities of some of the adverbs are investigated in depth, to show more in detail to complexities of their distribution. The appendix gives an overview of Dutch adverbs of degree.

Better Career Prospects For Those With Their Bachelor Of Arts Degree Through The Tech Advances Of Online College Programs

Many online educators these days utilize streaming video and other multimedia offerings that bring instruction to life, promote discussion among students and keep students involved in their coursework, a recent edition of e-schoolnews.com noted. As more students enroll in online degree programs as opposed to traditional campus-based learning opportunities, they are finding additional ways to communicate and collaborate. Some are gathering in person, others on the Internet.

Colleges, universities and technical schools often employ a program known as Blackboard for as part of campus and online degree offerings. Through Blackboard, students can access coursework, interact with each other and their instructors, and receive teacher evaluations. In Michigan, students at a community college can access more than 10,000 NBC News Archives through Blackboard, e-schoolnews.com reported. In Wisconsin, students at a technical college access content through videoconferencing, according to a June report in Campus Technology. The Bell Educational Trust, Campus Technology noted, through an online program allows students to work in groups, hold discussions and debates.

Online college and university students through programs such as these garner a sense of community. Some students might nevertheless want to interact with peers outside of the classroom. Those studying at colleges, universities and technical schools that have physical campuses might attend campus-based events as a means of networking with others.

Open house events are a part of many colleges, universities and technical schools. These events introduce students to institutional offerings and provide opportunities to meet students, faculty and staff members. Online degree students attending open houses might gather suggestions about different courses that might serve them best. They might also learn about new developments in their particular fields of interest. Open Houses can also provide opportunities to establish new friendships that online college, university and technical students can then develop through online programs.

Some students might be too busy with work and family responsibilities to attend campus events. Others might be enrolled in entirely virtual college, university and technical school programs. In instances where online college students can't attend campus events, video conferencing and other programs might encourage social interaction and networking.

Many working toward online degrees also set up Twitter, Facebook or other social networking accounts in order to communicate with their peers. The Bell Educational Trust, in experimenting with Second Life as an online social program, hosted a party for Greek candidates on its island.

With Second Life, students – through personalized “avatars” – can interact with others and travel by foot, air and teleport. Colleges, universities, technical schools, libraries and education groups are on the site, allowing students to attend art exhibits, lectures, fashion shows and more. The program is free to download. So is Skype, whereby students can communicate with each other via video telephone calls. With Skype, students need computers furnished with speakers and a web cam.

Whether a student is working towards their bachelors degree or masters degree at one of the country's many online programs, there are many wonderful opportunities for any learner to collaborate with others in the same position. Thanks to advances in Internet technology and the emergence of more sophisticated online school programs, students will find that they have a wide range of opportunities at their fingertips.

''How Do We Know They Know?'': A conversation about pre-service teachers learning about culture and social justice

''How Do We Know They Know?'': A conversation about pre-service teachers learning about culture and social justice

$33.95

Teacher education programs are charged with educating teachers to teach all students-preparing them to teach multiethnic, multiracial, multilingual, and differently-abled students in an increasingly global, inter-dependent world. This book takes as its starting point the assumption that pre-service teacher candidates, primarily white and middle-class, come to college to pursue a teaching degree having little if any experience of a social nature with persons not like themselves. Rooted in areas of theory and practice and based around the "Schools and Society" and "Culturally Relevant Teaching" courses required by the Teacher Education Program social justice conceptual framework, "How Do We Know They Know?" is a conversation about ways to assess these pre-service teachers' growth and movement, as they progress from naiveté to awareness about the realities of culture in schools.

 (Re-)reading Hardy.

(Re-)reading Hardy.

$69

Though the project of "rereading" an author occurs every time we pick up a book, whether that be an original work of fiction, an adaptation, or a book of criticism about that author, "rereading" is also the theoretical approach that I take in this thesis to Thomas Hardy and to certain of his twentieth and twenty-first century reincarnations. With Gerard Genette's concept of hypertextuality from Palimpsests: Literature in the Second Degree, I look both at Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Posy Simmonds's graphic novel, Tamara Drewe, which is based on Far from the Madding Crowd, and investigate the ways in which we have inherited Hardy after years of his fiction circulating in secondary and post-secondary schools and years of literary criticism. Hardy studies has a long history of pigeon-holing Hardy as the simple archivist of rural Wessex, but when new versions of Hardy appear in our literary culture, such as Simmonds's novel, they shine new light on the author, often reaffirming certain Hardy-esque qualities, but also revealing connections that may have long been hidden from readers' views because of the overwhelming power of that rural Hardy. This thesis is an effort to reveal some of those connections, to point out where the traces of new "Hardys" exist in old "Hardys" and where the old Hardy continues to hang on. I hope that, by interrogating this interchange between the nineteenth-century Hardy and his contemporary selves, some new directions for Hardy studies can be suggested---directions that are not restricted to the useful, but worn paths of tragedy and rurality.
